After Avengers: Endgame claimed the title of the most-watched movie of the year and now people are wondering what will happen to the best-loved superhero collective. It seems that Endgame was only the conclusion of a part of Marvel’s story and that several other movies and TV series are in the works. Many of us have already seen the first sequel, that’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, but many more TV shows and movies have been announced, and these will feature characters old and new.
After Spider-Man: Far From Home, a new chapter begins
One thing’s for sure: after Spider-Man: Far From Home, the long-awaited Phase 4 of the MCU will finally begin. We don’t know how many films there will be or when it will end, even if Marvel regularly treats us to three films per year, and this is not expected to change in this new phase. The three movies of 2019 were Captain Marvel, Endgame and Far From Home; it’s very likely that the first film in 2020 will hit our screens in late April-early May.
How will Phase 4 of the MCU play out?
In order to assess all plausible theories regarding Phase 4, we need to take into consideration some important information: when the contracts of the Marvel actors expire, how many films are still scheduled, how many new contracts involving new actors there are, and, more importantly, how to interpret the vague statements given by Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, who always has the last say on the future of the Marvel Universe.
A head’s up on the upcoming Marvel titles
At this moment in time, no title has been confirmed, but several rumours and leaks claim that the following films will soon be coming out. In no particular order: the third chapter of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the second chapter of Doctor Strange and Black Panther, a Black Widow movie, and the arrival of many new characters such as the Eternals or Shang-Chi. And let’s not forget Disney +, the new service of the American production company, which will also feature stories on Loki, Falcon, Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Vision and the Scarlet Witch.
And there’s more… Marvel never stops!
There are other hypotheses on possible future Marvel stories connected to the Avengers and based on characters which have only been mentioned briefly in previous movies: this is the case, for example, of Captain Britain (quickly mentioned in a scene in Endgame), Valkyrie (to whom Thor gives control of New Asgard) or Ms Marvel (a teenage superhero).
And there are also people who believe a new Iron Man is on the horizon: Harley Keener, who we briefly spotted at Tony Stark’s funeral in Iron Man 3, could actually take his place. Some people are even crossing their fingers for an all-female Marvel superhero movie, led by Captain Marvel. Last but not least, it’s also important to remember that Disney has also purchased 21st Century Fox: this means that X-Men and the Fantastic 4 could also end up in the big Avengers’ pool.
Time travel opens up new possibilities
After Endgame, time travel takes on new, fundamental importance and allow us to think that stories which are not connected to the present, or to the “main universe” could be developed.
