San Diego Convention Center, 21st July to 24th: four days that represent a dream of every comic, movies, tv shows and videogame fan. Comic-Con International is a thrilling event, full of new announcements, of celebrities going through the stands, vertical panels and lots of Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn cosplayers (these characters were trending this year), but also Star Wars and Marvel ones.
What is San Diego Comic-Con International
San Diego Comic-Con International’s Mission is very clear: it is a “nonprofit educational corporation dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular artforms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture”.
The first convention was held in 1970, when comic book fans Shel Dorf, Ken Krueger and Richard Alf aggregated one hundred other fans to talk about that year’s comic news. The first meeting had the function to finance the second one, where 300 people attended, and so on until today, when San Diego has become the perfect location to celebrate the year’s news in the comic world. Today Comic-Con International attracts more than 130,000 people every year: from all over the world comic fans go to San Diego to attend the convention, or to compete which cosplay is the best. And a lot of people follows what happens in specialized blog or on Twitter.
The most important reason for which Comic-Con is relevant in the pop culture world is because during the convention every great entertainment brand makes great announcements, about future news and a lot of other else. Let’s see what happened in 2016 edition.
Marvel: from Doctor Strange to Brie Larson as Captain Marvel
Marvel fans were queueing outside the Convention Center the night before its panel to find a place. Why? In 2015 Marvel was not at Comic-Con San Diego, because “we only want to attend Comic-Con if we have tons of new material to show to fans”. And on July 24th Marvel kept their promises.
Starting from Benedict Cumberbatch on stage, together with the whole cast: the second official Doctor Strange trailer was announced (coming to theatres on October 26th). Here’s the trailer:
Academy Awards winner Cumberbatch also joins Marvel Universe. These were his words: “Doctor Strange is not only an entertainment movie, but also an interior, very specific, journey, conducted by a man looking for himself.”
It was then presented the first official Thor: Ragnarok teaser. After Thor was kept on hold by its colleagues Captain America and Iron Man, he will come back on September 2017, with the third movie of the Thor Trilogy.
After that, on the Hall H stage it came Tom Holland’s turn, the next Spider Man, who will collect Tobey Maguire heritage and will appear on Spider-Man: Homecoming, whose were announced the official synopsis and the official cast. It is due to come to theatres on July 2017.
Marvel super-panel goes on with the the Guardians of the Galaxy – 2 trailer, but it’s not over yet. In the end, it was announced who was the Academy Award winner who will interpret Captain Marvel: Brie Larson, who won Best Actress for the movie Room.
Warner Bros and DC Comics
Before Marvel, in Hall H it was Warner Bros’ panel turn, which began from the advantageous collaboration with DC Comics in last years, showing an amazing montage that synthetized the past and the future of this collaboration. Then every movie director from the next movies went on stage, from Suicide Squad with Davide Ayer to Ben Affleck with Batman.
The first thing shown is the first trailer for Wonder Woman, that will be set during First World War, and then the first teaser for Justice League was shown.
But fans were enthusiast above all for Suicide Squad, the movie coming to theatres on August 13th, whose was shown an extended trailer where Will Smith leadership is clear.
It then comes the lightest moment of the panel, when it was presented the first official trailer for The LEGO Batman Movie, coming out on February 2017.
Game of Thrones: it is confirmed that Winter is coming on Summer
Another very awaited panel was Game of Thrones: it was confirmed, for starters, that Season 7 (which will have a total of six episodes) is coming on Summer, and not on April anymore. Then, there were shown a behind-the-scenes teaser and various Season 6 Bloopers, where the main character is – as usual – Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) who cannot pronounce the word “benevolent”. Then Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) joked about Jon Snow (she thinks she is a better leader than he is) and about Ramsey Bolton (after his death, she may be like blood?!)
San Diego kermesse so passed this year as well, and got so many emotions for fans and created a lot of hype for the months to come. We are expecting a 2016 and 2017 full of movie news!
Tribe, bringing comics and movies fun into technology, will also soon present important news, regarding the launch of new audio and travel products, which will be decorated with Marvel, DC Comics, Star Wars and Disney licenses, and many more!
