On Sunday 18th Emmy Primetime Awards were held in Los Angeles: they are the most important television Awards, just like Academy Awards for movies and Grammy Awards for music. Emmy Awards are bestowed by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, an organization working for the television industry advancement in the US. Their first edition was in 1949, and in 2016 the Emmys were at their 68th edition. With 23 nominations, there were great expectations about Game of Thrones, which won 12 prizes in the last edition of 2015.
How did the Emmy Awards 2016 go? Game of Thrones won the same number of prizes as in 2015 (12!), e and the HBO TV series had a historical record-breaking triumph: it became the most awarded TV series of all time, with 38 prizes in six years.
Five Game of Thrones actors were nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister, who won this award in 2011 and 2015), Lana Heady (Cersei Lannister), Kit Harington (Jon Snow, who was the favorite to win the prize), Emilia Clark (Daenerys Targaryen) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), but unfortunately no one of them won the prize. Ben Mendelsohn from Bloodline and Maggie Smith from Downtown Abbey won the prize, indeed.
The most coveted prize for every actor, the lead role, went to Rami Malek for the male category. He is the main character in Mr. Robot, a TV series where he interprets a depressed hacker who joins the fsociety. Rami Malek, a real acting talent, was very excited, since the winning the most important price a TV actor can win already after the first season of the series he leads.
For the female category, the Award for the Best Actress in a Lead Role for a Drama Series went to Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black, a TV series that reached its final season in 2016/2017, where Maslany interprets Sarah Manning and her clones circulating the world.
Also the Emmy Award won by Julia Louis-Dreyfus was remarkable, since it was the fifth time that Dreyfus won the Best Actress in a Lead Role for a Comedy Series, and also very current: USA Elections are coming soon, and the VEEP took her role.
Back to Game of Thrones: no actor won the prize, but which prizes did the HBO TV series win? Game of Thrones won the most coveted prize of all: Emmy Award for the Best Drama Series. After we watched the sixth season, this award was something very close to certainty, but the competition was very rough, even though lighter than the previous years (Game of Thrones also won this Award in 2015!), when Mad Men (2011), Homeland (2012) and Breaking Bad (2013 and 2014) won. At Emmy Awards 2016, Game of Thrones only faced House of Cards (the Netflix series after four season still has to win the most important award), The Americans, Mr. Robot, Better Call Saul, Downtown Abbey and Homeland.
Game of Thrones also won two other important Awards: Best Screenplay in a Drama Series – for the episode Battle of The Bastards (6×09), written by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, and Best Directing in a Drama Series, also for the same episode, directed by Miguel Sapochnik.
These important Emmy Awards should comfort Game of Thrones fans, who have to wait until Late Spring 2017 to watch the seventh season, which will be the second-last, and will be aired later than usual, because of the winter coming.
Winter is really coming, and before its arrival Tribe is going to comfort Game of Thrones fans with the USB Flash Drives representing iconic characters such as Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister and Arya Stark.
