It’s just some days til the release in USA of Doctor Strange on November 4th, third film in the 3rd phase of Marvel Cinematic Universe, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios. Written and directed by Scott Derrickson, the movie is about the story of the super-hero neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange, who becomes the main protector on Earth against magical and mystical threats thanks to his dark powers after a car accident.
Doctor Strange is interpreted by Benedict Cumberbatch, a famous actor nominated to an Academy Award in 2015 for the movie The Imitation Game. He became popular after the interpretation of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC TV mini-series Sherlock, which in 2014 gave him an Emmy Award as best actor.
Who is Doctor Strange?
Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange (or Doctor Strange) is a Marvel Comics character created by Steve Ditko, appeared for the first time in Strange Tales – before he had a series of his own – in 1963. The doctor is a distinguished neurosurgeon, but also arrogant, selfish, self-centered, eager, materialist and unbridled hedonistic. His career gets irreparably interrupted after a car accident, when he drove excessively while drunk. Even though he managed to avoid the amputation of his hands, his hands nerves were compromised.
Doctor Strange could not not accept a second line position, so he lavishes his heritage in alcohol, and gets thrown in the street. He hears about an old hermit, called Ancient One, with supernatural taumaturgical powers, who could be able to heal him. The Ancient One refuses to cure him, but he offers to teach him the mystical arts: a series of fortunate events will bring the two to establish a good master-apprentice relationship.
After seven years and have embraced an ascetic lifestyle, Doctor Strange goes back to the USA with a new identity: the Master of the Mystic Arts. His mission is to protect Earth against mystical threats thanks to his huge knowledge about dark arts and enchantments. The two main weapons used by Doctor Strange are:
- The Cloak of Levitation
- The Eye of Agamotto
Doctor Strange decides to dwell into Sanctum Sactorum Palace, at 117 Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, New York, together with his loyal assistant, Wong.
Doctor Strange movie in 2016 with Benedict Cumberbatch
Since the Eighties, lots of Doctor Strange movies were in the working. Only in 2005 an agreement was reached between Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures. In 2010, then, Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer were scripted as writers for the film. In 2014, Scott Derrickson as director and Benedict Cumberbatch as main character were announced. The shootings began at the end of 2015 in Nepal, and then prosecuted in UK and New York in the later months.
The choice of Benedict Cumberbatch was a lucky guess, because the actor took a sabbatical year teaching English in a lamasery in Darjeeling, in India. He then declared:
“I’m very enthusiast about my spiritual dimension. It’s a very important thing in my life. I do a lot of meditation: it’s a huge way to calm myself, to escape from confusion, to have a focused mind and to be a kinder person. My experience in Darjeeling taught me a lot… I grew up a lot when I was very young. It is something I will keep in my life.”
In the movie, beyond the two weapons mentioned earlier, Doctor Strange will also use the enchantments launch with tongue-twister names, the creation of light mandals and the ability to create portals in order to travel through the Earth.
When will Doctor Strange be released, and how was its reception?
Doctor Strange was very rumored during the year, for example at Comic Con International at San Diego. The global premier was shown on October 13th in Hong Kong, and then later on October 20th in Los Angeles. The movie will come to theatres on October 26th in Europe and on November 4th in USA.
The reviews all agree to consider Doctor Strange a great success: the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes has a favorable index of 100% based on 11 reviews, with a medium vote of 6.7/10. On Metacritic the medium vote is 73/100.
