Lately, there has been lots of talk about Marvel movies, for obvious reasons, but it’s also important to remember that DC has many interesting films out from now until 2021.
James Wan’s Aquaman definitely helped towards relaunching the franchise and the acclaim from critics and spectators alike (the film grossed over one billion dollars) convinced Walter Amada, DC’s president of production to focus on standalone movies rather than the shared universe, thus adopting a diametrically opposite logic to Marvel Studios.
But let’s take a look at what DC movies await us at the cinema and what the current scheduled release dates are.
The Batman – 25th June 2021
Several rumours were circulating about Ben Affleck taking on the role of actor (as Batman/Bruce Wayne), screenwriter and director. Recently, this was all cleared up and it was confirmed that Affleck will only be in front of the camera, while Matt Reeves will take on directing duties.
It appears that the new Batman will present a younger Bruce Wayne than the current one and that he will be in the guise of detective, the star of a noir universe.
The Suicide Squad – 6th August 2021
After official confirmation on behalf of James Gunn, director of the Suicide Squad sequel, there’s lots of talk about the fact that the movie will not be a re-release of its predecessor. After Gunn stepped away from Guardians of the Galaxy, the director defected to the competition and with renewed enthusiasm: this is why he stated that he’ll adopt a “decidedly different approach to the franchise”, hinting at a new direction both for the story and the characters.
Birds of Prey – 7th February 2020
After the release of the trailer (see the link below), there’s not been much more talk about Birds of Prey. All we know is that the movie and characters have a fun, playful tone and that, of course, Harley Quinn will be in the picture, as will Huntress, Renee Montoya, Cassandra Cain, and the evil Black Mask and Victor Zsasz.
The movie will be directed by Cathy Yan.
DC Super Pets – 21st May 2021
All that we know about this animated movie, which is generating a great deal of curiosity, is that Jared Stern will be directing it and it will tell the tales of animals with superpowers which have often collaborated with the Legion of Superheroes to defend the Earth.
Wonder Woman 1984 – 5th June 2020
Initially scheduled for 2019, and then pushed back to 2020, this movie is the sequel to Wonder Woman set in the 80s and stars Gal Gadot. Amongst the other characters, it’s worth mentioning Cheetah in the role of the “antagonist” and Steve Travor who will come back to life and will be essential for the purposes of the plot.
The movie will be directed by Patty Jenkins.
And what does 2019 hold for the DC universe?
The most highly-anticipated DC movie in 2019 is The Joker! We’ll talk more about this in articles to come, but for now we can say that the film’s star is Joaquin Phoenix and it will be the first DC/Warner film to be completely disconnected from continuity.
The film is scheduled for release on 4th October.
