It’s one month since the global release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and it’s the time to see if it the long awaited Star Wars spin-off was well received by critics, fans and the box office.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s plot
Before we begin, it’s best to remember the plot of the movie. There’s a rebel main character – Jyn Erso – and a group of fighters from The Resistance, who allie to fight the Galactic Empire. The main goal is to steal the plans from the Death Star, the frightening empire space station that threatens to destroy planets.
The plot is located between Star Wars Saga Episode III – Revenge of the Sith – and Episode IV (the very first movie from the saga, A New Hope). Rogue One is about the part of the story that is only mentioned in the first Star Wars, but it’s fundamental for everything that will happen in that episode and the Death Star destruction in particular.

Rogue One: the opinions by cinematographic critics
The first spin-off that will compose the Star Wars Anthology trilogy divided critics and audience. There’s a majority of (very) positive reviews, but there were also negative comments by influential critics all around the world. Peter Travers from Rolling Stone has a positive opinion about the movie because it remembers him about the first Star Wars trilogy: he thought that Rogue One has the same pritimitive, eccentric and emotional spirit that made us fall in love with Star Wars in the same place. Peter Bradshaw from Guardian wrote that Rogue One has a high fascination because of its mysterious and oniric reproduction of renown elements by Star Wars fans.
Not everyone thinks good about the movie. The first critic at New York Times, A. O. Scott, defines Rogue One as a poor movie with a clumsy plot, despite the spectacular cast. Whose is the fault? Maybe production’s: “All the pieces are there, in other words, like Lego figures in a box. The problem is that the filmmakers haven’t really bothered to think of anything very interesting to do with them“. Someone even wonders is it’s worth to continue with the Star Wars Saga, after this movie, that seemed flat and inexpressive – just like a movie still to be shot – to Richard Brody (The New Yorker).
Rogue One’s success at the box office
Whatever critics thought about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the movie keeps on generating a high revenue: more than $800 mln after one month since its release. It is the 7th most watched movie in theaters in 2017.
Who watched the movie had a good opinion about it: the average IMDb users evaluation is up to 8.1/10, and Metacritic has a good 7.7. Looking at this data it seems that the movie was well appreciated by the public.
Rogue One: what did Star Wars fans think about it?
What did the greatest fans of Star Wars Saga think about Rogue One? The expectations were very high, especially after the enthusiasm generated by Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens from December 2015, a real success.
Looking at the web, it’s easy to find comments on the movie by the authentic fans of the saga: there is no unanimity in the general opinion. Many fans thought that the choice to shoot this movie was very corageous, because it’s not easy to confront a Star Wars spin-off to a normal Star Wars episode. Others complained about their higher expectations: despite the strong enthusiasm at first for the arrival of a spin-off from that particular period of time, the plot needed a better development. Others thought that it was a good movie simply because it was a Star Wars movie. The most authentic fans had one final complaint: it’s a pity that John Williams did not compose the original music!
